PostgreSQL is a powerful open source object relational database system with over 15 years of active development, available with an open source license. We have gained great familiarity with this tool and use PostgreSQL (and its extension for geographic data PostgreGIS) as a valid alternative to proprietary relational database management solutions in a wide range of application domains, especially when it comes to processing information of geometric or geographical nature.
